Tarn Trail: a growing line along the turquoise shore

The old trail game, made smooth and set beside a glacier lake. Gather cones, trout and compasses, chain quick pickups for a combo, and do not tie yourself up.

Tarn Trail is our version of the trail game many of us first met on a chunky old phone. You steer the head of a line around a grid. Each item you collect makes the line longer, and the line follows you wherever you have been. Touch a wall, an obstacle or your own tail and the round is over. Simple rules, and a game that gets wonderfully tense once the line fills half the board.

We made two changes we care about. Movement glides smoothly between squares rather than jerking from one to the next, so steering feels like guiding rather than stepping. And there are three things to collect: spruce cones are common and worth 1 point, trout are worth 2, and the rare lake compass is worth 5. The trout and compass do not stay around for long.

How to play Tarn Trail

  1. Choose Classic for solid walls, or Garden for edges that wrap and ice blocks on the board.
  2. Press Play and steer with swipes, the on-screen pad, the arrow keys or W, A, S and D.
  3. Collect spruce cones, trout and lake compasses to score points and make your trail longer.
  4. Grab items quickly one after another to build a combo bonus on top of their usual points.
  5. Avoid walls, ice blocks and your own tail; one bump ends the round and records your score.

Getting better at Tarn Trail

  • Hug the edges early in Classic; a trail that runs around the outside leaves the middle open for later.
  • A compass is worth 5 points but vanishes quickly, so only race for it if the path there is clear.
  • Every pickup speeds you up a little, so plan your turns slightly earlier as the round goes on.
  • In Garden, use the wrap-around edges as a shortcut, but remember your tail wraps around with you.
  • Never turn back on yourself in a tight space; leave a loop open so the head always has an escape route.

Cones, trout and the rare compass

The three things you collect are not just decoration. A spruce cone is worth 1 point and adds one segment to your trail. A trout is worth 2 and adds two. A lake compass is worth 5 and adds three, which can turn a comfortable trail into a crowded one in a single gulp. The rarer items also disappear after a few seconds, so each one asks a quick question: is it worth the detour?

On top of that, picking things up quickly in a row builds a combo, shown on screen as a multiplier. Chaining a cone, a trout and another cone without wasting time pays far better than wandering. The best runs feel like a smooth dance around the board rather than a series of lucky grabs.

Classic walls or Garden wrap-around

Classic is the version most people remember. The edges of the board are solid, so a trail that misjudges a corner ends there. It rewards careful, tidy routes and is the best place to learn how quickly the speed creeps up as you grow.

Garden changes the shape of the problem. The edges wrap, so leaving on the left brings you back on the right, and chunks of glacier ice sit on the board as fixed obstacles. It feels freer at first and then sneakily harder, because your tail wraps too. Your best score is kept separately for each mode, so you can enjoy both without one spoiling the other.

Questions about Tarn Trail

Yes. Every item you collect speeds things up a touch, so a long trail late in a round moves noticeably quicker than at the start.

Stars come from your points in a round: reach 12 for one, 40 for two and 80 for three. Each mode keeps its own best score as well.

Running into a wall in Classic, an ice block in Garden, or any part of your own trail in either mode.
