Cable Car Slide begins with a picture that looks perfect for a moment, then the tiles lift and fly off to scrambled places, leaving one square empty. Your job is to slide tiles into that gap, one at a time, until the picture is whole again. It is the same puzzle that has lived in pockets and desk drawers for over a century, painted with our mountain scenes.

There are eight pictures to choose from and three sizes. The 3x3 grid is quick and friendly, the 4x4 is the classic, and the 5x5 is a proper workout. Every shuffle is generated so that it can always be solved. A move counter and a timer run above the board, and the stars you earn depend on how few moves you needed.

How to play Cable Car Slide

  1. Pick a picture from the eight thumbnails, then choose a 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 grid.
  2. Watch the picture break into tiles and scatter, leaving a single empty square behind.
  3. Tap a tile next to the gap, swipe it, or use the arrow keys to slide it into the space.
  4. Turn on Numbers to see each tile’s position, or hold Peek to view the finished picture.
  5. Finish the picture to stop the timer, see your moves and collect between one and three stars.

Getting better at Cable Car Slide

  • Solve the top row first, then the left column, and you are left with a smaller puzzle to finish.
  • Place the last two tiles of a row together; one sits in place while the other swings round beside it.
  • Switch on Numbers for big grids; a picture full of snow and sky is hard to sort by colour alone.
  • Glance at the star limits before your first move so you know how tight a three-star finish will be.
  • When a 5x5 feels hopeless, finish the outer ring; the inner 3x3 that is left is a puzzle you already know.

Shuffles that always have a way home

Here is something many players never hear: a sliding puzzle with tiles placed at random has roughly a one-in-two chance of being impossible. Swap any two tiles in a solved grid and no amount of sliding will ever fix it. We did not want anyone stuck on a picture that could never come together.

So every Cable Car Slide shuffle is built to be solvable. When a puzzle feels stuck, it is because the route is tricky, never because the route is missing. That small promise changes how the game feels. Rather than wondering whether the puzzle is broken, you start looking for the sequence of moves you have not tried yet.

Stars, moves and the urge for one more go

Every finished picture earns at least one star. Two and three stars depend on how many moves you needed, and the limits are shown before you start, so you know what you are aiming for. Your best for each picture and size is saved in your browser, which turns eight pictures and three sizes into a little shelf of personal records to chip away at.

That is where the game hooks you. A first solve of the hanging glacier picture on a 4x4 might take a few hundred moves. Then you notice the three-star limit, and a quiet challenge begins. Learning to finish rows without disturbing what you have already built is the key, and it is oddly satisfying to watch your own count drop each time. Players who move up from 3x3 to 4x4 to 5x5 often find that the same handful of row-finishing tricks carries them through all three sizes.

Questions about Cable Car Slide

No. Every shuffle is built so that it can be solved, whichever picture and grid size you choose.

It shows each tile’s number on top of the picture, which helps a lot on larger grids or on pictures with big areas of similar colour.

Every finish earns a star. Finish under the two-star and three-star move limits shown at the start to earn more.
